Baby proofing your home

As soon as babies are on the move, whether that is rolling, crawling or walking, they get themselves into all sorts of places. I remember leaving Eliza on her play mat and coming back in to find her almost under the sofa – I didn’t even she could roll before then! Now she is crawling and taking her first wobbly steps, nowhere is safe – especially the kitchen. She is a whizz at opening the cupboards and taking everything out!

The stairs are another area that Eliza makes a beeline for. Her hearing is incredible – she can hear you opening the stair gate from the other end of the house, and she will crawl as fast as she can to get through the gate and up the stairs. It’s the same story with the garden steps. Basically, anywhere she shouldn’t be is where she likes to be the most!

Baby-proofing the home doesn’t have to be a headache. You don’t have to go to extremes – just make sure the most hazardous areas are safe for your little explorer. SunLife have created a unique online baby-proofing tool, which visually shows how to baby-proof your home and why it is essential to keep certain items away from curious little hands.

What are your top tips for baby-proofing the home? Is there anything you found invaluable? I think for us it has to be the stair gates – stairs are Eliza’s favourite thing, and they can be so dangerous.

My son is two and is obsessed with the kitchen cupboards. Measuring jugs and cup are not safe anymore. He even figured out how to open the baby lock which was supposed to keep him from getting in. We did have the kitchen closed of till last month so that’s why this is a new obsession as for the rest of the rooms the doors are shut if we aren’t in there.
