Nutrition for babies on the move

When we first started weaning Eliza, it was just a case of a few tastes, experiencing some new textures and learning to move food around her mouth. Now she is 1, most of her nutrients come from food rather than milk, and we try hard to makes sure she east a healthy, balanced diet full of the things she needs to help her grow and develop.

In the last month, Eliza has really changed – she has gone from a little, active baby crawling around the floor to a walking, chattering little girl well on her way to toddler-hood.

Since the day she took her first steps she has got faster and faster every day, and although she still crawls when she wants to get to something quickly, she spend a lot more time upright than she does on all fours. It quite obviously tires her out, because she has started napping for longer during the day again, as well as sleeping through the night.

Luckily, she has a great appetite, and she pretty much eats anything we put in front of her. Her current favourites are spaghetti bolognese, roast dinners and scrambled eggs – and all of these are great sources of protein and carbohydrate for a busy baby! I get as much red meat and green, leafy veg into Eliza as I can to keep her iron levels topped up now that she not drinking formula, and she drinks a fortified oat milk too. She is also a real fruit fiend, and loves bananas, satsumas and blueberries. As well as making sure she eats well, keeping Eliza well hydrated is really important – especially in this weather. She has spent a lot of time playing in the garden lately, and it can be easy to forget about drink breaks, so we have started taking a beaker outside with us every time we go out to play, so she can grab it at regular intervals. Eliza usually drinks water, but she sometimes has some HiPP Organic juice with mineral water too – really refreshing in the summer sun!

Ah there is no stopping her now! 🙂 It’s so cool to look back at when we started on the wean team and see these babes turning into little people.
