Ways to get more involved with your child’s school

Your child’s education is extremely important, so you want to be involved to ensure that your child is getting the best education possible. Working with school administrators and teachers will allow you to get to know what their programs are like, and you can also offer up tips and advice for making improvements wherever necessary. Keep reading to learn about a few ways that you can get more involved with your child’s school, regardless of what grade your child is in.
Set up a Fundraiser
Many schools are in need of funds to purchase the supplies they need to educate their students. As a parent, you can set up fundraisers throughout the year so you can help the school raise these funds with greater ease. You can sell IQ Cards Christmas cards, scented candles, handmade jewellery, or other popular items, or you can get even more creative and set up raffles and giveaways or special events.
Join the PTA
The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a great way to get involved in what’s going on in your child’s school. You’ll be able to volunteer at or help set up fundraisers, as mentioned above, and you can even help set up field trips and fun educational events at the school itself. This will allow the kids to learn in new ways outside of the classroom, and it will give you an opportunity to volunteer your time in a meaningful way that will benefit all of the children in the school, including your own.
Get involved in policy making
The policies that are implemented and followed by school administrators will have a big impact upon the type of education that your child will receive and the resources that he or she will have access to. If you can, get involved in the school on a deeper level by working on policy. A lot of schools will have parent advisory councils or site councils that work on determining the direction that a school will go in. School boards are also in need of people who can fill all of their available positions, so you can get involved in that way. Or you can volunteer to serve as a member of a special committee that can do everything from evaluate the school’s safety policies, to check that the curriculum is the best that it can be.
Set up field trips
Setting up and chaperoning field trips is yet another way that you can get involved in helping your child’s school expand the students’ horizons. Talk to your child’s teacher about setting up a field trip to a place where the kids will be able to learn about science or history in a fun and hands-on way, and then volunteer to chaperone to make sure the kids stay safe the whole time.
As you can see, there are several ways that you can get involved in your child’s education by working with the school system. Just remember that it all starts at home, so make sure that you’re there for your son or daughter to address concerns, answer questions, and encourage positive behaviour and good grades.
