Keeping your teeth in shape | What to look for in a dentist

Everyone needs to take care of their teeth: failing to do so may not only result in gum and mouth problems, but it can lead to bigger health problems as well. And finding the right dentists for regular checkups is a great way to stay on top of your oral health.

And no, all dentists are not the same. Like any other profession, there are great dentists, bad dentists, and middle-of-the-road dentists. It’s your job to figure out which dentist will work best for you and your family, so you should do a little research, the same as if you were looking for anything else. Here are a few things you should do when choosing a dentist.

Confer With Your Health Insurance

If you have health insurance that includes dental coverage, then you may already have limited your options, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you just do an internet search for dentists in your area, you’ll probably be confronted with twenty or thirty different practices, so having a limited choice from the start can save you time and effort.

Most coverage plans will limit your choices to a few dentists that are in the “network” that the health insurance covers. You will get the best dental coverage by staying on the network, which means that your copay will be lower and you may even be covered for a free visit or two every year.

You can always choose to look outside of your coverage, but you will then be responsible for all of the costs. If there is a particular dentist that you really like but who isn’t covered, the choice is yours. Chances are, though, you will always find a few options that suit your budget and your life within the network.

Look for Reviews

If you can, try to get reviews from people that have visited the dentist before. Ask your friends and family who they use and, if they like them, see if that dentist is a possibility for you and your family. People love recommending things they enjoy to others and they will usually be honest, especially if they like the dentist.

You can also look for reviews online. Visit the dentist’s social media pages and read the comments that people have left. Of course, as with anything on the internet, there are people out there who just like to be negative, so take online reviews with a grain of salt. If you read enough reviews, however, you should be able to get a good idea of the way people see the dentist and their practice.

Think About the Location

If you only visit the dentist once or twice a year for checkups, the location of the office may not be that important to you. But if you have some oral problems that require more attention, then you probably want to have easy access to the office.

However your oral health is, think about the time it will take you to get to the office when you need to. Are they all the way across town or close by? If they’re not close to home, are they close to your work? Questions like these can help you make the right decision.

The location of the office shouldn’t be the main determining factor in choosing a dentist — price and quality should — but thinking about the travel time and convenience may help break a tie between two or three dentists who look good for your needs. Make a Consultation

Even after doing your research, it’s not a bad idea to visit the dentist yourself for a consultation, You can think of the consultation as an interview, where you can get all of the information you need and see if you like their personality, office space and what they offer.

If you actually meet with a potential dentist, you’ll probably quickly learn if they are right for you. You can look around the office for cleanliness and professionalism, tour the facilities and even perhaps get a chance to talk to someone in the waiting room. You can then compare your findings to what you’ve learned online and through others to make your final decision. Even with all of the information at your disposal, sometimes just a few minutes with someone can tell you all you need to know.

I don’t like the dentist I would rather have a baby, but unfortunately since suffering a massive stroke my gums are affected meaning that I have to visit the hygienist every three months in order to prevent my teeth from getting so loose that they fall out!
