Review | Cry Babies

The Cry Babies advert has been around for a while now – I’m sure you’ve heard the song. Every time it comes on the TV, the kids all shout about how fantastic they look, and how much they would love one to look after – so when we were sent one to try out I knew it would be popular! There are 3 different babies to choose from, and we received Lea, who wears a leopard print hooded onesie.

Eliza was keen to get the doll out straight away, and was quick to cuddle it – although it is quite heavy and difficult to balance due to the weight of the head. The arms and legs are moveable, and the clothes can be removed for washing.

As the name suggests, Cry Babies cry. To comfort them, you can offer a cuddle or the dummy to stop the tears. And I mean real tears. Cry Babies have a removable panel under their hoods, and inside this panel is a refillable water reservoir. It’s really simple to refill, which is great – because it doesn’t last long! When Lea cries, the tears come flowing down her face – so much so that you should expect to get wet. The crying starts as a whimper before building up to a LOUD wail, only remedied by a firm cuddle or the dummy. This is attached to the doll with a ribbon, so you won’t lose it. And this is a good thing, because that crying is pretty piercing, and you will want to get that dummy in asap! Eliza has discovered where the water goes, which means she often pulls the hood down, and can remove the panel and lid herself, so I can see these parts being easily lost.

I can see why this doll appeals to children. It has a wide, open face with a great expression. The clothes and dummy are fairly easy to use and the real tears are something that Eliza has never come across in a doll before, so it’s a real novelty. However, I do think it is just that – a bit of a novelty item. I don’t think that she will want to stop play regularly to have the water refilled, and so that feature won’t be used all the time. The crying works without the tears, so it’s definitely useable without the water, but this does just leave a noisy, heavy doll which isn’t the one she is reaching for the most – she seems to much prefer the soft bodied dolls without additional features.

Cry Babies are available from several retailers for £29.99. The price isn’t too bad in comparison to some of the bigger brands, but it’s not something I would rush to buy again.

I must admit that I haven’t come across these before, but as my granddaughter is into dolls and babies in a big way I may get her one
