Anki Overdrive

Jacob and Gemma have always loved car racing sets, and we have had a few in the past from Hot Wheels and Scalextric. They have always been well enjoyed, but often overlooked for other toys purely because they are so bulky and time consuming to put together. We heard about Anki Overdrive a while ago, and I remember thinking it sounded like a good idea, although I wasn;t quite sure how it actually worked. It sounded a little bit technical for me – but I was very wrong!

To get started, you need to download the Anki app – do check your device’s compatibility first, but we have had success with an iPhone, iPod and a Samsung S7, so it’s definitely able to be used with both Apple and Android. Once you have the app, you need to create an account, which is really simple.

Once you have a profile set up on the app, you’re almost ready to race. You need to get the cars out and put them on charge, which takes between 8 – 10 minutes. The beauty of Anki Overdrive track is how simple it is to set up. The pieces simply click together magnetically and they stay in place once constructed. There are several track layouts you can copy from the back of the box, or you can create your own.

Once the track is competed, open the app and follow the instructions, you can play against a friend or you can play against the computer, which makes it ideal for children playing by themselves or with others. There are lots of different races to attempt, or you can do battle with weapons.  There are over 300 hundred upgrades for the cars, but you have to win races or battles to get credits to buy the upgrades, This also unlocks tougher races so the more you play the more you can do! Once you have chosen and connected to your car and the track is built, you need to place the cars on the track, which will configure the track by sending the cars around it. Each piece of track tells the car what it is so whether it’s a straight piece or a corner, the car will stay on the track – unless you are going too fast! This system also allows the cars to change lane at any point on the track which means you can have contact with the other vehicle- but watch out as this can damage the health of the car , which you can monitor on your controller.

You can get different accessories to customise your own track which includes jumps and collisions packs, or get different vehicles, including lorries which you can race.

There are a few useful tips, when starting up a new game;

  • always put cars on charge first as you can not pair a car to your phone unless the car is charging,
  • keep the track and cars free from dust – you have a special pad to dust off the wheels
  • keep all packaging (including the box) to keep the track and cars clean and safe. The track is really easy to pack away when not in use, and all the pieces slot neatly into the box. The box itself is really sturdy, so you don’t need to worry about extra storage for keeping the set safe and tidy.

Overall the kids have loved Anki Overdrive. It is so easy to build and play, and they can be left to enjoy themselves, battling it out with each other or the computer.

    This looks great. We love anything that combines play and technology. I know this is something Mia would be really interested in and the fact that you can upgrade and change the play is great because it means so many more opportunities to play with the same game 🙂

    We are huge fans of anki overdrive. We’ve had it for over a year and it’s still the most played with toy xx #triedtested

    Sounds like a great toy for growing kids. My boys would have loved something like this if it had been around back when they were younger. #TriedTested

    We have this and the kids absolutely love it. They can set it all up without me getting involved which is a big win for me, #TriedTested

    This is brilliant. My 5 year old might be a bit small for it still but if he is still into cars in a few years, which he more than likely be, this would be top of the list for this birthday or Christmas. He loves anything remote. #triedtested
