Transforming your kitchen into a statement space

As one of the most commonly used rooms of the home, your kitchen shouldn’t be neglected. A bold design will impress all visitors and help ensure you and the family start and end each day feeling uplifted. Discover the key steps in transforming your kitchen into a statement space and start the new year with a bang!

  • Feature a bold colour

While in bedrooms and living areas you should consider which colours are most restful and stick to these shades, the kitchen is an active space where you can be more experimental.

Feature a bold colour so your design packs a punch, either across your fittings and fixtures or on the walls. Currently, green kitchens are trending as they feel fresh yet tranquil and warm. Whichever colour you choose, ensure it’s one you love because you’ll be surrounded morning and night – and it would be expensive to update! Be wary of darker shades in smaller kitchens as this will make it feel claustrophobic, or opt for a feature wall for a pop of colour without shrinking the space.

  • Layer your lighting

Any interior designer will tell you that layered lighting makes all the difference in the look and feel of a room. Instead of relying on basic overhead lights which can be harsh and make you feel stressed, incorporate dimmer switches for ceiling spotlights and add extra fixtures which hang closer to countertops.

Pendant lights are a popular choice for illuminating breakfast bars and tables, or you can go for a luxe look with a chandelier in a modern or traditional design.

  • Mix your textures

Combining contrasting textures is another way to elevate your design for an expensive feel. Pair natural materials like wood and stone with man-made ones such as glass, metal and plastic.

Wooden floors work well in kitchens and will help to bring warmth, but be sure to treat them properly to avoid warping or staining. Lookalike laminate or tiles in a natural shade might be more sensible if you have messy children or pets with scratchy claws! Pair this with marble or quartz countertops, metal cabinet finishes and glass or plastic decorations.

  • Show your personality

One surefire way to give a room design real flair is to express your personality. You can really have fun with this to create a space with impact that feels like a personal oasis.

Why not browse special second-hand shops for vintage cabinet knobs and add these to your modern cabinetry for an old-school feel? You could also consider open shelving which reveals cupboard contents, ideal if you’re a foodie who likes to be organised!

Increasingly, homeowners are having a stab at designing a customised backsplash using sticky laminate or decorative tiles which has the benefit of being practical as well as decorative. Connect to your backsplash design by displaying corresponding artwork, plants and ornaments.
