5 tips for redesigning your bathroom

Redesigning a bathroom can be a real upheaval with builders, plumbers and tilers all working in one small room. There can be mess, dust and a certain amount of disruption, but it can make such a difference to your home, and can add value too. Here are my top 5 tips for redesigning your bathroom:

1. Choose a neutral bathroom suite – if you go for a white base for the larger items in your bathroom, you can easily accessorise, update and change everything else in the room without needing to change the suite. This is the bit that causes the most upheaval, so only having to do it once is a real bonus!

2. Always have a bath and a shower installed if you can. If you have the room you can have a separate bath and walk in shower, but if not a shower over the bath works just as well. It means all your family members have the option to use either, and if you have separate ones you can even get 2 children washed at the same time!

3. Choose tiles carefully. Tiling is another big part of a bathroom and so you do need to think carefully about what you choose. As a general rule, neutral colours work well, but they don’t have to be boring! There are so many tiles out there you are bound to find something that works for you. Ask tile shops if you can take samples home, and hold them up against your walls to get a better idea of how they will look. If you like bright colours but worry it will be too much, consider breaking it up with paler colours in between, or use the bright colour as a splashback or feature wall with softer colours elsewhere.

4. Accessorise! There are so many accessories you can use to make a bathroom welcoming, and of course these are much easier to change and update when you feel like a change! Think about towels, bath mats, soap and toothbrush holders, candles, creams and lotions and pretty storage boxes. 

5. Get someone in to do the work for you! It can be tempting to save a bit of money and do the job yourself – but fitting a bathroom is a big undertaking. There is a lot of work involved and it can take a long time, especially if you are trying to fit it in around a family and a job. Save yourself the stress and get someone in to do it for you – then all you have to worry about is getting the kids to bed so you can relax in your new bath!
