Family bathroom design tips

There’s no denying that family bathrooms can be chaotic places. They’re where we spend a good portion of our mornings and evenings, which means they need to be functional spaces that work for everyone.

While functionality is a must, that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on being playful with key interior designs. Having a home that looks good will help make you and your family feel ready for the day when they do their morning routine.

By incorporating clever storage solutions, durable materials and a touch of personality, you can create a space that caters to everyone’s needs. After all, anything that helps to promote smooth mornings and stress-free evenings is a major bonus.

Maximise storage

Family bathrooms are typically overflowing with toys, toiletries and other bathtime essentials. That’s why good storage solutions are a must.

To make the most of your space, consider vertical storage with wall-mounted cabinets and shelves. Otherwise, mirrored cabinets are a popular option to help reflect light, while built-in drawers and cubbies can help you keep the room looking organised. Open shelving is perfect for frequently used items like towels and washcloths, however, closed cabinets with baskets or dividers can help contain clutter and maintain a sense of order.

Lighten up the space

Prioritise natural light by incorporating strategically placed windows or skylights.

If natural light is limited, you could invest in bright, cool-toned lighting fixtures. This will not only enhance visibility for morning routines and nighttime tooth brushing, but it will also make the bathroom feel more open and airy.

Consider illuminated mirrors to add a touch of modern luxury and make the space more practical. This will come in handy for shaving, makeup application and tooth-brushing.

Focus on durability

Easy-to-clean surfaces are ideal in a family bathroom. Ceramic tiles for the walls and on the floor are a popular choice for this reason. They’re not only durable, but they’re waterproof too – plus, anything anti-slip is ideal to help prevent accidents.

Even when choosing the taps and other fixtures, choose something more likely to withstand wear and tear, otherwise you could face repairs in a few months.

Embrace multi-functionality

Consider a shower-bath combination to cater to different preferences and age groups. If you have the budget and enough room, you could even go for a double vanity with separate sinks to reduce congestion on a morning.

You might also find it helpful to store a laundry basket in your bathroom so that dirty clothes are dumped in the right place. Some families might find it beneficial to buy a bathside stool that doubles as a step so little ones can reach the sink independently.

Add a splash of personality

Functionality and style are key, but don’t forget the fun factor. Introduce playful accessories like colourful towels or themed shower curtains that reflect your children’s interests. Make sure all their toys are easily accessible so the space doesn’t feel too clinical.
