‘Wreck this Journal’ – review

A little while ago we were asked to review a new book by Keri Smith called ‘Wreck this Journal’

My children have been taught from a very early age to respect books, and to treat them gently and with care. So when I dropped this book in front of Gemma for her to have a look at, she didn’t know what to do. The pages are filled with instructions such as ‘Colour this whole page in’, ‘Poke holes in this page with a pencil’ and ‘Tear this page out and crumple it up’.
Gemma asked me several times if she was really allowed to do these things! I reassured her it was OK, just this once – and away she went!

As you can see, this book is a lot of fun for kids (ok, ok and adults too), especially those with a creative side. Being allowed to ‘wreck’ a book is a new concept for my children and they really enjoyed being allowed to do ‘naughty things’ and spent a long time going through the pages and giggling together. They especially loved the page that says ‘Cover this page with dirt’ – cue them spending a huge amount of time in the garden, and coming back in looking like they had been rolling in a mud pit 😉

Overall? A really fun idea, something that allows children to break the rules for once. Just make sure they know it is this book, and this book ONLY that can be used in this way! Definitely not the Kindle.

My daughter completed wrecking the ‘Wreck this Journal’ I bought her when she was 16. She loved it and was so creative with the instructions. Such a great idea.

I love this idea! I’ll have to keep it in mind for when my daughter gets a bit older and can understand that it is specifically for that book. 🙂
