How to check and maintain your heating system

Just like any other mechanical or electrical equipment, your heating system needs frequent maintenance to make sure everything runs safely and efficiently. You don’t want your furnace to break in the middle of winter.

Regular checkups on your heating system informs you of any defaults early enough. You also need to treat your heating system with frequent maintenance to reduce risks that demand major repairs. Besides, regular maintenance increases the life of your heating system and helps you avoid damages that may require replacement. Read the guide and learn how to go about checking and maintaining your heating system.

1. Check the system and replace the furnace filter

A blocked furnace filter will not filter air supply and will lead to a reduction of how efficient your furnace is while in operation. Check your furnace filter regularly to ensure it is not clogged. If blocked, try to unblock it or invite a professional to do it. An open furnace filter filters air supply and promotes the efficiency of your furnace.

2. Look for rust, cracks and any damages on the heat exchanger

A crack in your heat exchanger may blow out the pilot light or the burner. This, in turn, results in a situation where there is no heat. A large crack can upset a stable flame or cause burner flames to glimmer out of your burner opening. It could result in a fire if everything goes sideways.

It is, therefore, important to inspect your heat exchanger regularly and seek Furnace repair in Ramsey or other areas, in case of cracks to keep you and your family safe. Rust slowly results in holes or cracks as it eats up the metal. Make sure to avoid rust in your heating system and replace the heat exchanger as soon as you identify damages.

3. Inspect the venting system for blockages, leaks and holes

Inspect the furnace pipes for any crushed or disconnected section. Check the whole duct length for seal leaks. In case of any seal leaks, repair them using a pipe mastic sealant. You can always contact a professional contractor to do the task for you if you cannot access the ducts.

Your vents could be clogged from improperly installed pipework insulation that got in, debris or pieces of the old furnace filter. If you don’t unblock it, it will affect the effectiveness of your heating system or cause no-heat up situation at all. Hiring a heating contractor to clean the whole duct ensures your vents are not clogged while ascertaining that your heating system runs efficiently.

4. Check if your burners need to be cleaned or if they are damaged

Inspect your heating system for damages. If there are any, repair them soon enough or make necessary replacements. Check if you need to clean your burners and clean them using a toothbrush or vacuum if dirty.

5. Ensure all your heating vents are unblocked and open

Remove any item around the heating vents including furniture to make sure there is maximum airflow in the room. Clean vents to remove dust that may block airflow. Ensure your heating vents are always open for efficient heating.

6. Update your heating system

Previous model heating systems may consume more energy than modern ones. A modern, efficient furnace achieves as high as 97 per cent efficient ratings. Replacing your heating system to an advanced one translates to great savings. Apart from saving your energy, updating your heating furnace eliminates expensive repairs and guarantees your family’s safety.

7. Retrofitting

Whether you use a gas boiler or furnace at home, retrofitting is important that improves the efficiency of your heating system without replacing it. It does this by allowing the integration of the latest technologies in your system. However, it is wise to consider the following before opting for retrofitting.

The cost of retrofitting your existing heating system and compare it with the cost of replacing it.

Retrofitting depends on the fuelling of your heating system. Consider the pros and cons of retrofitting and analyse if it will be worth the struggle.

Most people go for retrofitting mainly because they want to save on energy or they want to improve the efficiency of their heating system. Before opting for retrofitting, analyse whether it will result in what you want, improve efficiency or reduce energy consumption. If not, replace it with a cheaper one or one that saves on energy.

Final word

Checking and maintaining your heating system may save you from the cost of replacing it. Furthermore, it improves its effectiveness and saves you from severe damages that demand repairs. Always maintain your system for guaranteed safety.
