Europe’s family holiday classics

Algarve

The family holiday is one of life’s great staples. A time to sit around the pool, get a bit sunburnt, buy lots of ice creams, but most of all have a jolly good time and make some memories.

These days, destinations are popping up all over the place as the new ‘place to be’ and the hot holiday on the market. But what if you’re not into all of that? What if you want a good, old-fashioned time at an established resort?

No, we’re not talking old-fashioned like Morecambe Bay or Scarborough for the weekend, but the best-known destinations around Europe.

Just remember the ‘classics’ are ‘classics’ for a reason. Here are four of the greats and why they still offer the best time for you and the family.

Algarve, Portugal

Everyone you’ve ever met has been to the Algarve and has gone again the next year. There’s a reason for this: it’s brilliant.

The Algarve is a consensus choice for one of the most beautiful parts of Europe and is Portugal’s biggest tourist hotspot. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, blue waters and lively local towns. You can find lots to do in the likes of Albufeira, Faro and Portimao, with the choice of resorts plentiful for a simple beach holiday.

The Algarve is one of the best dolphin watching spots in Europe, which is a fantastic attraction for the kids.

Tenerife, Spain

A longstanding choice for British sunseekers, Tenerife welcomes the young, old and everyone in between to its diverse, fun loving island.

Whilst the partiers are off in Playa de las Americas, you can find plenty of family friendly spots around the island. Away from the obvious attractions of the golden beaches, Tenerife offers plenty in terms of history and scenery on top of all the usual comforts that go with a well-known beach resort.

A perfect destination for a villa holiday, Villa Plus offer some spectacular locations that are fit for you and a group of friends, meaning you can enjoy the tropical climate at a great price with friends and family alike.

Corfu, Greece

For all year-round sun and cheap package holidays, Corfu is a classic.

Another island steeped in ancient history on the one hand and a vibrant party scene on the other, there’s plenty of room in the middle for you to enjoy the traditional sun, sea and sand family outing.

Beautiful beaches offer child friendly waters to splash around in and great cuisine options are never in short supply. You can happily do a lazy beach holiday or a full historical excursion, of course the best trip is probably somewhere in between.

London, UK

London

Enough of the sun! If you’re not obsessed with a hot climate and a swimming pool, London has always been a fantastic family destination.

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t visited the capital, and it’s fair to say everyone remembers their visit. In terms of things to see and do, it’s unrivalled. It’s also a great way to get the kids learning about the rich history of their home country.

A great option for those not wanting to subject their children to an unfamiliar environment, London can offer plenty of excitement and bright lights whilst giving the kids their home comforts.

Next time you’re coming to book the family holiday and you’re thinking of branching out to an unknown, just remember the tried and tested locations. If they’ve been popular for decades with holidaymakers, the chances are you’re going to have a great time just like everyone else!
