This summer, our local library has been holding the ‘Summer reading challenge’ where children are required to read at least 6 books over the course of the summer holidays. Gemma and Jacob were both really keen to take part in this, and the first day of the summer holidays saw us at the library choosing the first 2 books.
Once they had read 2 books, they then returned to the library, and were rewarded with stickers. After 4 books they got more stickers and a glow in the dark wristband. After 6 books they went back to be awarded with their certificates, and a medal for the completion of the challenge.
Both children loved doing this. They adore the library anyway, and having a goal to work towards really encouraged their reading, even during the holidays. In fact, Gemma exceeded her tagret, and has so far read 12 books this summer. A regular bookworm.
2 very proud children, one very proud mummy AND reading progression from both kids. A real summer winner.
Do your kids like reading? Do you visit your local library?
Wow! That’s great!
I really wanted my son to participate in it, and that was what actually made him agree to go to the library and start reading books that aren’t about football or facts. Unfortunately he didn’t like the books in the challenge, but he was willing to take home some “regular” books, and discovered the fun in reading.
I think it’s a great way to get kids into reading, and I am sure you are very proud of your kids! They dod wonderfully 🙂

What a shame he didn’y like the books – our library let the children choose any books for the reading challenge. I love reading, and it’s great to see kids getting ivolved too 🙂
How wonderful to see children CHOOSING to read and being so motivated. The teaching in my is literally dancing with joy at this post Kate 🙂 x #SSAmazingAchievements
Thought you might like this one 😉
Congrats to them!
Our local library hosted a summer reading challenge too! They awarded the children with a coupon for a free smoothie after 6 hours of reading and a free wrap after 10 hours of reading. My daughter worked hard and got both 🙂
I love it when children love to read – you should be a proud mama!
Wishing you a lovely day.
xoxo
Oh you must be so proud.I have to admit we usually try to take part in the summer reading challenge, but I’m not sure where Summer went this year.
Dexter LOVES it. He gets it from me I think as he’s caught me with my head in a book a few times now. It’s so cute watching him hold a book upside down and turn the pages.
Congratulations to them both!
I’ve been very slack with reading this summer. We’ve done a bit here and there, and Lucas will read any sign or magazine he’s left with, but he really wanted to do the local reading challenge and I completely forgot to go in and pick up all the info. Whoops!

This is a fantastic way to encourage reading, and it’s lovely that they enjoyed taking part. I used to take Ethan to the library but haven’t continued since we moved, I should really get back into it.
Thanks for linking up with Small Steps Amazing Achievements :0)
