The importance of play

In August 2015, 1000 British mums with a child aged between 2 and 12 were surveyed about their attitude to technology and play. Children these days spend an average of 17 hours a week in front of a screen – that’s almost double the amount of time they spend playing outside – and almost 1 in 3 parents are worried that technology affects their childs development.

Technology is such a huge part of our lives these days that I think it can be easy to forget how damaging in can be if used incorrectly. It’s a fantastic, educational and fun tool, and I am by no means suggesting that we don’t use it. But we do need to be careful about using it as a ‘babysitter’ too often, and remember the simple pleasure of reading a book, kicking a ball or throwing stones into a river.

Do your children use a lot of technology? What is their favourite thing to do after school and at the weekends? Do you think that they spend enough time playing outside?
